Soaked to the bone

Fount: "We have a wiver in this house!"

We arrived home from Solomon's Island, Maryland late Saturday afternoon. It was a nice, quick getaway filled with sweet family time, crab legs, many pee pee accidents, and the beach. Pictures on that are soon to come :)

When I opened the door to our house, the first thing I noticed, was that it didn't smell like our home. You know how your house smells like you. It's fall, so ours smells of pumpkin, but on Saturday, it smelled a little like the ocean. Which explains the flood of water that had taken over our entire downstairs. Courtesy of a piece of cheap Chinese plastic connecting the toilet to the hose in the wall. I don't think Tim and I had time to speak. We hustled the kids to there bedrooms and started hauling furniture upstairs. I'll never forget seeing Tim make several laps around the house. We have one of those pass through kitchens...I kept thinking he'd say that it hadn't made it to every room, but he didn't. It had. I don't think either one of us could believe this had happened, or even where to start. Thankfully, it wasn't the upstairs.

I think Tim waited about half an hour or less to start tearing out the carpet. (You can see some of it piled high in the picture below). I'm sure it weighed a ton! It's times like this that the distance between us and our family is really felt. I've found myself saying that a lot since our family has grown. Thankfully, it took me about a minute to call our good friend, Luke. He dropped what he was doing and came over to help Tim.

Whenever we've experienced something that was either a tragedy or just something we weren't expecting, Tim has always remained solid, strong, and optimistic. Totally the opposite of me :) When something throws me for a loop, I'm prone to cry and vomit. God knew this about me and He brought me the most perfect mate. Tim is steady. He keeps saying, "Now you're going to get a pretty floor." He knows just how to perk me up :)

The day before water engulfed our downstairs, I read a blog post about Life in Grace's house fire. I can't tell you how much that totally puts things in perspective for me, not just in this situation, but in many. I find myself getting really attached to my things. I'm sentimental, but is that an excuse? We're always telling the kids, "Things don't matter. People do." Is God gently trying to teach me a lesson?

Our insurance adjuster is coming out tomorrow, so is our flooring person. Woo hoo! I can't wait to get the ball rolling and things back to normal. In the meantime, I'll be posting pictures of the progress we make downstairs.

My mother-in-law sent me this verse today (Thanks, Alice!)

"Do not fear for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine. I will be with you when you pass through waters, and when you pass through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you."
Isaiah 43:1-2
